A Caregiving Thanksgiving Holiday: Carelift International “harvests” healthcare services to developing nations through“used” medical equipment

Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. November 24 2003-- Carelift International, a Philadelphia-based international medical relief organization, makes everyday Thanksgiving. Carelift International provides health care technology to the world's less fortunate in a unique and innovative way, by "harvesting" used medical equipment from hospitals and health care facilities across the United States.

This equipment is then refurbished at Carelift's very own operations center in Philadelphia, and shipped to developing countries around the world, particularly in the former Soviet Union. These countries have highly trained medical staff, but very little of the abundant health care technology that we take for granted in the U.S. While items like heart monitors, ultrasounds and mammography units are commonplace here, to these countries they are truly a life-saving miracle.

One such miracle is the women's wellness center opened by Carelift International in Kiev, Ukraine in March 2003. In its first six months, thanks to the medical equipment and supplies donated to Carelift by American hospitals, health facilities and medical manufacturers, thousands of women have been able to visit the center and receive preventive care, including mammogram screenings. Several women have been diagnosed with early stage breast cancer and begun treatment-something that would have been impossible just a few months ago. Thanks to this American "miracle," the women of Kiev no longer live in fear of breast cancer, knowing that their doctors have the tools to diagnose and treat the disease. This miracle will continue as Carelift will open yet another women's wellness center in Kharkiv, Ukraine's second largest city, this March.

Another miracle is in Tashkent, the capital city of Uzbekistan, in the heart of Central Asia. In 2000, Carelift International provided, through the generosity of its donors, biomedical equipment and supplies to the Tashkent Pediatric Cardiac Center. This support enabled doctors to increase the annual number of life-saving cardiac surgeries performed on children from 20 per year to approximately 200 per year. The results were astounding-but so was the demand. Through the continued generosity of Americans, June 2004 will see an improved, expanded Tashkent Pediatric Cardiac Center open to serve the needs of Central Asia's most vulnerable citizens-children with congenital heart defects.

These harvested materials not only save lives, they also spread goodwill toward Americans. The recipients of Carelift International's aid give thanks every day for organizations like Carelift and the generosity of Americans that makes it all possible. Regardless of language, creed or color, good health is something everyone can be thankful for.
