Durham Family Physician Relieves Strain on Families Without Insurance

Durham, NC- Dr. Russell Collins is finalizing preparations to open Triangle Family Medical Center, a cash-only family medical practice, by March 3rd. His office will be located in the Executive Park at the intersection of Highways 54 and 55 in Durham. By specializing in patients without health insurance, Dr. Collins will provide his services to a group hardest hit by the rising cost of healthcare.

Dr. Collins will offer affordable health care to his patients by eliminating the fees and exorbitant overhead associated with filing patient insurance claims. "The administrative cost associated with managed healthcare has put a tremendous burden on the average small provider, especially on primary care physicians who see the highest volume of patients."

Dr. Collins will charge patients according to the time spent and the complexity of their problems. There will be three levels of visits for new and established patients: short, medium, and long. A short visit, 10 to 15 minutes, will be $50 for new patients, and $40 for established patients. Dr. Collins will also help control his patients' costs by offering lab tests, medical supplies, and medications at a reduced rate.

Eventually Dr. Collins hopes to establish a network of healthcare providers and pharmacists willing to offer discounted fees to patients without health insurance. Patients will also be referred to an insurance specialist who will help educate them about alternatives to costly insurance policies such as catastrophic coverage and healthcare savings accounts.

"People are falling through the cracks in this country because there isn't any safety net to catch them." According to statistics cited on the North Carolina Committee to Defend Health Care's website, "Fifteen percent of North Carolina's population, or over a million North Carolinians, are without health insurance. . . . An additional million or more North Carolinians do not have adequate insurance, cannot afford prescription medication, doctor's bills, long term care, etc." According to Doctor Collins, "Most doctors are so busy that they rarely have the time to consider their patients' economic issues. Often these doctors are at a loss about how to help uninsured patients." By opening the new practice, Dr. Collins hopes to change this trend.

Dr. Russell Collins has been a Board Certified Family Physician since 1985. He received his medical degree in 1982 from the University of Bordeaux in Bordeaux, France. After returning to the U.S. he completed his three-year family medicine residency through the Medical College of Georgia, in Augusta. Most recently, Dr. Collins practiced family medicine in Lenoir, North Carolina for thirteen years before moving to Durham in 2000 with his wife and youngest daughter.
