April 4, 2004--Unite For Sight is pleased to announce the First Annual Unite For Sight Conference on April 24, 2004 at NYU School of Medicine in New York City. The "Perspectives: Eyes on Public Health" Conference, which offers a program of symposia and lectures, serves as a forum for the exchange of ideas among leading figures in ophthalmology, public health and policy. The Conference also provides a unique opportunity for students to present independent research at a Student Plenary Session. Open to the general public, the conference is a partnership among medical and public health professionals and college, medical and graduate students to develop solutions to international health disparities. There is still much progress needed to improve the health outcomes of medically underserved children and adults throughout the world. By exchanging ideas and working together, the conference will catalyze and implement effective eye and health programs in the United States and in developing countries.

The Unite For Sight Conference has an exciting agenda with speakers from varied disciplines and backgrounds, including renowned physicians Dr. Walter Tsou, President-Elect of the American Public Health Association, and Dr. H. Jack Geiger, founding member and Past President of Nobel Peace Prize Winning Physicians For Social Responsibility and Physicians for Human Rights. Additional lectures include "Advances in Corneal Transplantation" by Yale Assistant Professor of Ophthalmology Dr. Shachar Tauber and "Vision 2020: The Right to Sight, a Global Initiative," by Dr. Louis Pizzarello, Chair of the North American Region of International Agency for the Prevention of Blindness.

Unite for Sight is a nonprofit global humanitarian organization that develops sustainable solutions to international health disparities. Unite For Sight has grown to become an international network of 1,000 students who work nationally and internationally to tackle eye health care issues. With fifty chapters established at universities throughout the world, from Armenia and Malawi to the United States, England and Canada, Unite For Sight works to build healthier communities through disease prevention, eye health promotion, and health education. Each chapter collaborates with local community infrastructures to improve access to health programs, and our primary objective is to prevent blindness among millions in the United States and abroad.
